Muir Woods / Sausalito Tour with AlcatrazWe will cross the Golden Gate Bridge towards Marin County's headlands and then ascend Mt. Tamalpais, a 2600-foot natural landmark that marks our approach to the exquisite beauty of Muir Woods in a valley hidden from the urban landscape just a few miles away. Centuries ago, this area was home to the Coast Miwok Indians, and the unspoiled beauty of the ancient redwood groves remains much as this tribe must have experienced it. Some of the trees in the groves are over a millennium old; several measure over 252 feet tall; and one is even 14-feet wide!

We will spend 1.25 hours in this natural oasis, allowing us ample time to stroll the trails along Redwood Creek and stop at the Visitor Center and Gift Shop.

This charming hillside community with a colorful past offers unique views of the bay, including Angel Island, and the San Francisco skyline, and is a shopper's mecca of unusual boutiques, galleries, shops, and cafes.

Itinerary:

A beautiful tour of Muir Woods and Sausalito, as described above under Muir Woods /Sausalito Tour, plus a tour of Alcatraz Island, a unique landmark in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. The theme of this desolate rock is isolation: from its unusually remote location and perilous surroundings, to the island's stark edifice that was originally built as a military fortress to protect gold bullion and later turned into the notorious prison designed to make escape nearly impossible. Today, Alcatraz is one of the most popular destinations in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Alcatraz prison was built in 1934 to confine the most notorious and dangerous convicted criminals of the Great Depression and post-Prohibition era. The prison housed 1545 inmates in its 378 cells and employed 90 prison guards manning three 8-hour shifts. The prison's more famous inmates included Al Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelly, Robert "The Birdman" Stroud, and Bonnie and Clyde's driver, Alvin 'Creepy" Karpis.

The tour begins with an orientation video, followed by a self-guided audio tour of the cell block and a leisurely tour of the island grounds. A National Park Service ranger will be on hand to offer interpretive talks on the history, flora, and fauna of the island.

NOTE: At the driver's discretion, this tour may be revised, depending upon circumstances such as weather and traffic conditions on the day of the tour.
