We will cross the Golden Gate Bridge towards Marin County's headlands and then ascend Mt. Tamalpais, a 2600-foot natural landmark that marks our approach to the exquisite beauty of Muir Woods in a valley hidden from the urban landscape just a few miles away. Centuries ago, this area was home to the Coast Miwok Indians, and the unspoiled beauty of the ancient redwood groves remains much as this tribe must have experienced it. Some of the trees in the groves are over a millennium old; several measure over 252 feet tall; and one is even 14-feet wide! We will spend a little of an hour in this natural oasis, allowing us ample time to stroll the trails along Redwood Creek and stop at the Visitor Center and Gift Shop. After leaving the natural beauty of Muir Woods, we will venture toward the Marin bayfront to Sausalito, a unique artist community whose downtown area is a National Historical landmark. This charming hillside community with a colorful past offers unique views of the bay, including Angel Island, and the San Francisco skyline, and is a shopper's mecca of unusual boutiques, galleries, shops, and cafes.
