Day One: A 154-mile narrated bus tour from San Francisco to Monterey. We'll travel through Silicon Valley, San Jose, and Gilroy (site of the annual Garlic Festival) to Salinas Valley, the childhood home of John Steinbeck. Next it's an hourlong visit to the National Steinbeck Center Museum then a break for lunch. After lunch, we'll drive past Laguna Seca through Monterey, making sure to see historic Cannery Row, the waterfront Victorian-home-lined streets of Pacific Grove, world-famous 17 Mile-Drive and Pebble Beach, and the waterfront artist colony of Carmel. We'll check into our Monterey hotel at 5:30 pm and dine in the hotel.
Day Two: We'll take a breathtaking 138-mile drive south on the scenic coastal Highway One, traveling along the majestic coastline of Big Sur with views of the coastal redwoods, and will arrive in San Simeon just in time for lunch. In San Simeon, we'll take an easy 2-hour tour of the opulent Hearst Castle, built in 1920s through 1940s by famed architect Julia Morgan for newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst. Then we travel east to Paso Robles to board AMTRAK for our return trip to San Francisco. The train travels along the Salinas River, and you'll pass the rolling hills of the agricultural heart of Central California. We'll continue east to Oakland, the terminus for AMTRAK. At the train station, we'll board a bus, crossing the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge as we make our way back into San Francisco. After arriving in San Francisco around 10:00 pm, prepaid cab vouchers will be available for transportation to most major San Francisco hotels.
