FROM SAN FRANCISCO * Stay in YOSEMITE VALLEY
Yosemite Valley is located about 215 miles south east of San Francisco. Visitors should spend at least one night in order to see the incredible sights in and around the Yosemite Valley. It is possible to stay right INSIDE Yosemite Valley at YOSEMITE LODGE or THE AHWAHNEE HOTEL.
2 day or 3 day packages include: Motor coach transportation (April to October) or AMTRAK & VIA bus (November to March), entrance fee, 1 or 2 nights room at Yosemite Lodge or The Ahwahnee Hotel including tax and Glacier Point during the summer or Yosemite Valley tour.
First day: Board the motor coach at Tuscan Inn at 7:15, Handlery Union Square Hotel at 7:30, and the Hilton Hotel on Mason Street at 7:35. (See AMTRAK/VIA option below). On request we pick up at Marriott City Center in Oakland at 8:20 and Pleasanton at 8:45. With a short stop en route, arrival at Yosemite Park Arch Rock entrance is at about 12:30. After a brief Yosemite Sights tour (up to Tunnel View and south side of Merced River in Yosemite Valley ) the drop off at Yosemite Lodge or The Ahwahnee Hotel is at about 1:45. Your luggage is stored and you have time to take the free shuttle in the valley and get familiar. At 4:00 you can check in and get tour tickets for the next day.
On the second day you have reservations to take the 4-hour Glacier Point Tour leaving Yosemite Lodge at 8:30 a.m. This takes about four hours and goes up to about 8,000 feet in elevation. If the elevation bothers you (and during the winter months) the alternate is the 2-hour Yosemite Valley tour that stays around 4,000 feet level. If you are staying two nights you can take the tour to Mariposa Grove of Big Trees and Glacier Point for additional cost of about $35.
Yosemite Valley Free Shuttle Bus
The return trip starts with pick up at The Ahwahnee Hotel at 3:15 and then from Yosemite Lodge at 3:45. A brief stop is made at El Portal and then by about 6:00 in the Merced area. Coming over the Altamont Pass we reach Pleasanton by 7:00, Oakland by 8:00 and San Francisco by 8:30. The first stop is at The Handlery Hotel and then you are dropped off at the hotels from where you were picked up. (If you are going on to San Francisco International Airport it is best to take a shuttle or taxi from The Handlery Hotel).
Yosemite Lodge Located near the Yosemite Falls there are several two-story buildings amidst the sugar pine and redwood trees surrounding a central core that has a cafeteria, a food court and Mountain Room restaurant. Air conditioning and TV have not yet invaded these nicely appointed rooms each with two beds, bathroom, balcony or patio. There is a well-stocked gift shop and store, a large swimming pool and a post office on the grounds.
The Ahwahnee is a world-class hotel built in 1927 and kept in an excellent condition. Dinner at The Ahwahnee Dining Room will be in your memory for ever. All rooms have air conditioning and TV. Some rooms are available with king size beds.
Amtrak Option: From April to the end of October you travel by DIRECT motor coach. November to late March the departure is at 6:55 a.m. from AMTRAK depot at Ferry Building by motor coach to Emeryville and then by train to Merced and then by VIA motor coach to Yosemite arriving by 12:45 at Yosemite Lodge. The return trip from Yosemite Lodge leaves at 4:15 arriving in San Francisco by about 10:00 p.m.This AMTRAK/VIA option is offered any time of the year.
On certain dates tour cost may be higher depending on Amtrak rail fares.
